Photographic exhibition
In April 1940, Józefa Bujdo, aged 75, a widow and mother to 6 children, was arrested by the Soviet state police (NKVD) and deported to Aktobe, in present day Kazakhstan. During her imprisonment, Józefa wrote a series of letters, which she sent to her children. The contents reveal a highly emotional lament of how a matriarchal mother’s deportation, separation from her children and forced labour for strangers in distant lands formed the acute trauma that her health would not recover from.
