little free library opening in kaunas

Language and culture institute LINGUA LITUANICA wants to share this warm event, idea  that encourages reading books and invites everyone to join: on 16th of February, at 1 p.m. in the heart of Kaunas city, Student square, opening of international organisation’s Little Free Library  first BOOKS’ HOUSE will take place!

Project authors - Public communication students of Vytautas Magnus university Indrė Levickytė and Greta Rozenbergaitė invites to join not only Kaunas’ residents, but guests from other cities as well.

There are about 15 000 Little Free Library book houses worldwide and around 10 in Lithuania, most of which are in Vilnius. But in second biggest city of the country, Kaunas, this will be the first one.

People give various names to these objects: they are often called bird feeders, city furniture, book chapels, tiny book homes, but they all have the same purpose - it is an unconventional little library, integrated into city surrondings, which works 24/7. People are invited to share books by the motto “Take what you haven’t read yet, put back the book you’ve read”.

“Brought to life by the idea of book exchange, little library project mission is not only education of the community and giving an incentive to culture in Kaunas, but unique city atmosphere and space fulfilling, too”, said one of the project authors, Greta.

“The square was given Students’ name after the reconstructions in spring 2014, so we wanted to make our contribution improving Kaunas city, which has the status of academic city, as we are very happy about the municipality’s decision. We want to give thanks in the name of all students and Vytautas Magnus university community, leave our footprint in this city”, as Indrė shared her thoughts about the idea.

Language and culture institute LINGUA LITUANICA is also pleased to have the ability to contribute to the young peoples’ wish to read, improve, educate themselves and enjoy reding culture which brings all the world together. The institute community gives books as a gift and together with everyone involved in the project is expecting cultured, honest, curious readers, new ideas and lasting enthusiasm for the students, Kaunas city and Vytautas Magnus university.

Kaunas city municipality involved the book house opening in the programme of Lithuanian Independence Day celebration, therefore girls invite everyone to come to the Student square on 16th of February. “Come to satisfy your curiosity by looking inside the book house and find a book that is close to your heart, or leave a book with your wishes!”
